US Open tennis women’s final – Clijsters vs Wozniacki

Posted: 2009-09-13 by David White

Kim Clijsters is a hot favorite to win the US Open after her amazing victory over Serena Williams.

In all the furore it has almost been forgotten that she meets Caroline Wozniacki in today’s final. Clijsters’ best odds on victory are 2/7 (bet $70 to make $20 profit) while Wozniacki can be backed at 18/5.

Clijsters is 8/11 to win in straight sets and 10/3 to win in three sets. Wozniacki is 7/1 to win in straight sets and 7/1 to win 2-1.

But it would be foolish to write off the no 9 seeded Dane who strolled to the final with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Yanina Wickmayer.

Clijsters was unseeded for the tournament but she demonstrated against Serena Williams that she is back to her best form with a 6-4, 7-5 win. The match however will always be remembered for Williams being awarded a penalty point on match point after she told a line judge who had foot faulted her: “If I could, I would take this…ball and shove it down your…throat and kill you”.

Clijsters, who won the 2005 US Open, was rated a 17/1 chance at the start of the tournament while Wozniacki was best odds of 33/1.

There is NO excuse for this type of behaviour. Threatening a much smaller woman with death because of a game?

Inexcusable, there must be further actions/sanctions against this obviously troubled athlete.

It probably will not happen due to her American star status, pathetic.
