US Open 2013: Women’s Winner Odds and Betting Preview
NEW YORK, USA - Serena Williams is the most dominant force in woman's tennis and the American icon goes in search of her fifth US Open title over the coming fortnight as she bids to defend her Grand Slam crown at Flushing Meadows. The woman's event is shaping up to be a two-horse race between 16-time Grand Slam winner Williams and last year's runner-up Victoria Azarenka following the withdrawal of world number three, Maria Sharapova through injury. The shock retirement of Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli has also taken some gloss off this event which gets underway on Monday.
Serena Williams has only lost four matches all year and following her epic comeback in the final of this Slam twelve months ago against main rival Azarenka, the American is a very short price at 1.8 with Skybet to become the oldest winner of the US Open women's singles title. The draw has not been too kind on Williams as there are a number of top seeds that stand between her and a place in the final as she is likely to meet one of Radwanska, Lisicki or Li Na in the semi. The world number one is certainly the woman to beat now that her problems are behind her and if she arrives with her serve at its metronomic best the rest of this field face a difficult ask in New York.
There has been sustained support for Victoria Azarenka, following her favourable draw in the bottom half, and the Belarusian is now a top price of 4.1 with 888Sport, which still makes some appeal even if some of the early value has been snapped up. Azarenka began the season by defending her Australian Open title and even though a mid-season injury forced her to retire in the second round at Wimbledon she has fought back and her win over Williams in Cincinnati will have given her huge confidence as she bids to avenge her three-set defeat to Williams in last year's final.
There is a huge gap in the betting to the third favourite Agnieszka Radwanska who is a massive 20.0 with 888Sport but this is understandable given her draw in the same half as America's golden girl, Williams. The US Open remains he only Grand Slam that Radwanska has not reached the quarter-finals of and she has been handed a tough draw again here. Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki is her likely fourth round opponent while China's Li Na should wait in the quarter-final before a possible showdown with Williams if the matches go on seeding and so she makes little appeal at her current odds.
Li Na is a solid performer in the Grand Slams and even though she has failed to convert many of these performances, with the 2011 French Open her only title, she is a dogged fighter and could outperform her current price of 26.0 with Stan James. The Chinese player does not have the easiest route to the final and following her semi-final defeat to Williams in Cincinnati it seems likely that she could fall at a similar hurdle in this event.
The surprise 2011 US Open champion Samantha Stosur has not been at her best on the North American hard court swing this year but her likable attitude on court makes her appeal at 34.0 with Sportingbet. The Australian is in the bottom half of the draw which certainly gives her the best chance of repeating her 2011 success and she is one to watch over the coming fortnight.
One player who has come in for some support in the build-up to this event is Simona Halep who is currently available at 56.0 with Paddy Power and she could upstage fourth seed Sara Errani and eighth Caroline Woznaicki to secure a semi-final meeting with Azarenka. Only Serena Williams has had more success than the Romanian in 2013, with Halep winning 25 of her 28 matches this season, and this strong and determined baseline player looks likely to be the dark horse in this year's event.
The 2013 US Open gets underway on Monday 26th August and the Woman's Singles Final takes place on Sunday 8th September.
