Ladbrokes: Bookies reflect on most lucrative Wimbledon in history

Bookies reflect on most lucrative Wimbledon in history - Nadal & Djokovic 7/4 joint favourites for 2012

THIS YEAR'S Wimbledon has been the most lucrative in history for bookmakers according to Ladbrokes.

Turnover was significantly higher than in recent years thanks to several large bets such as the £80k at 5/4 (Djokovic) laid minutes before the final started.

Nadal went into the match as a significant loser due to the steady stream of bets across all channels including two £40k bets at 5/2 and 9/4 leaving the firm breathing a sigh of relief.

The two finalists are joint 7/4 favourites for the 2012 tournament from Federer at 4/1. Andy Murray is a 6/1 chance with Del Potro and Tsonga (both 20/1) looking the best of the rest.

Djokovic is also a clear 7/4 favourite for the US Open with Nadal (3/1) and Del Potro (6/1) challengers.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: "Punters have definitely kept us on our toes for the last two weeks. We're happy to have stayed on the right side of as many of the big ones as possible and figures from other markets are very healthy as well."

he added: "The betting heralds the arrival of new era at SW19 with Djokovic looking likely to be a force for years to come."
